The Namib Naukluft Park is the third largest game park in Africa and it is about 50.000 sgkms in size. It includes a 100 to 150km broad belt of land that stretches along the coastline from the Swakop valley in the north, towards the road B4 to Luderitz in the south.
Most parts of this enormous area are not accessible to man. One can only visit a small stretch north of the Kuiseb river: the Naukluft Mountains and the Sossusvlei in the central dune fields. the highlight of a visit to the Namib Naukluft Park i a trip to the Sossusvlei. It lies within the Central Dune Namib, which covers the largest part of the park (32 000 sqkms).
The Fish River Canyon is the second largest in the world and some of the rocks are up to 2 600 million years old!
From May to August, Ai-Ais marks the starting point for hiking trips in the Fishriver Canyon. In addition to the breathtaking scenery, there is a rich variety of wildlife and birdlife to be seen. One must be reasonably fit and of sound health to attemt these hikes.
Some of the highest dunes in the world are found in Sossusvlei and are more than 325m high.
The Sossusvlei, Namibia's famous highlight in the Namib Desert is a huge clay pan enclosed by giant sand dunes. Some of the spectacular hills of sand are 300 metres high (the highest in the world. Only after a heavy rainfall, which is a rare accurance in this area does the vlei fill with a turquoise lake that remain for quite some time, as the clay layers hardly allow any water infiltration.

The dunes of the Namib desert have developed over a period of many millions of years. It is thought that the vast quantities of sand were deposited into the Atrlantic Ocean by the Orange river. This material was subsequently moved northwards by the Benguela current to be dumped back onto the land by the surf.
