Epupa Falls

This is a favourite tourist destination, because of the scenic beauty of the falls. The riverine forests with their thick clusters of makalani palm attract a large number of birds, especially from January to May.

Epupa Falls are found in the far-northern Namibia. Epupa is accessible from Opuwo via the D3700 (170 km; 3 hours). Standard sedan vehicles are generally sufficient, except in the rainy season. A combination of water, rocks and trees that makes it among the most beautiful landscapes in my beautiful Namibia.

The Kunene River with makalani palms along its banks, breaks into dozens of small waterfalls that cascade between islands of mossy rocks upon which ancient African baobabs have long tightened their grasps.

The highest of Epupa’s falls is only 37 metres, but the spectacle of these suspended gardens, surrounded by the mist and adorned with rainbows, is one of surreal beauty constantly recreated.

The Epupa Falls is also home to the Ovahimbas, who are trying their best to protect it from a proposal to dam up the Kunene River. The argument of the Ovahimbas is that the project will not only destroy their extraordinary home, but also the pastures and the graves of their ancestors.

A walk to the Epupa Falls is relatively easy, extending no more than 800 meters from the camping site opposite the entrence to the falls. Visits to the local Himba villages can also be organised.

The area around Epupa Falls boasts over 300 species of bird and has earned legendary status among birders.
