Namib Naukluft Park

Many tourists travel through the Namib Naukluft Park, the largest nature reserve in Namibia. The park is situated south of the Swakop River and stretches inland from the coast in a strip of land, which is as wide as 150 kilometres in places. Two major ephemeral rivers, the Swakop and the Kuiseb, cut through this area, which covers gravel plains, coastal sand dunes, grassy plains and dry riverbeds.

South of the Kuiseb River tourists only have access to Sandwich Harbour along the coast, and inland they can travel via Solitaire and Sesriem over rolling hills and grassy plains, with a view of the towering escarpment in the east and the red sand dunes in the west. The Homeb campsite on the Kuiseb River provides visitors with a most unusual and unforgettable camping experience, and for the birder this area is especially interesting.

The Naukluft Mountains situated along the western margin of the highlands of Namibia, are part of the escarpment which separates it from the coastal lowlands.
