Brandberg is the house to many rock paintings in Namibia. The most famous of its more than 44 000 rock paintings is the so-called 'White Lady' frieze in the Tsisab Ravine.
Although the central figure is no longer considered to be a white female, the name White Lady has persisted.
A popular backpacking area, the Brandberg is best ascended by hiring a guide as there are no clearly demarcated routes.
The Branderg and the Spitzkoppe that rise above the Namib gravel plains are probably the two finest examples of inselbergs in the country. The Spitzkoppe also known as Namibia’s Matterhorn lies about 100 km from the Atlantic Ocean, while the Brandberg is some 70 km from the sea.
The Brandberg is the highest mountain in Namibia, being 2573 metres high, of which 2000 metres rise above the surrounding plains. Although the plains are sparsely vegetated they are more densely so than those around Arandis, with Welwitschia mirabilis, euphorbia, kwarda and the milk bush.
