| Situated 24 km west of the city, Daan Viljoen offers an ideal escape from the hustle and bustle of city life. The Daan Viljoen Nature Reserve lies just west of Windhoek, in the Highveld savanna. The area is hilly and semi-arid and the vegetation consists mainly of grassland with small, scattered trees.
Typical of these areas are the communities consisting of various acacia species such as camelthorn (Acacia erioloba), bergthorn, yellowbark acacia and hookthorn.
The great advantage for birders is that they can explore the park on foot to investigate the six different habitats- the hill slopes, the river valleys, the tourist camp, the dam sites, the cliffs and the perennial stream to the east of the park to which no tourist vehicles are permitted access.
This habitats accommodate several Namibia specials such as the Bradfield’s Swift, Rockrunner, Whitetailed Shrike, Monteiro’s Hornbill, Ruppell’s Parrot, Carp’s Tit and Ashy Tit.
The camp is frequented by many birds which become used to people and therefore afford bird photographers excellent photo opportunities.
Visitors can explore the park on foot (there are two walks and a two day trail), or by way of a short circular drive. Game to be seen include gemsbok (oryx), kudu, blue wildebeest, red hartebeest and impala, while good birding can also be enjoyed.
