Namibia's Desert Horses

Namibia is home to legendary desert horses.About 100 km east of Luderitz there is a signpost that indicates the turnoff to Garub, a maintained water point where the wild horses can be observed and photographed as they come to drink.

There are many stories surrounding the presence of these horses. One of the stories is that they are descendants of the horse stud belonging to Baron von Wolf who built Duwisib Castle 160 km north east of Garub.

Another is that they are descendents of horses left behind when the German Schutztruppe abandoned Aus in 1915. There was also the so-called Kubub stud that was bred at the Kubub Station under management of Emil Kreplin (major of Luderitz from 1909-1914), who supplied workhorses.
