I suppose you or your friend, family or colleague has been diagnosed with diabetics and you would like to find out more about this disease.

As I have found out, knowledge is power when it comes to diabetics. But most often diabetics’ information is not as readily available or disseminated as with HIV/AIDS or Cancer information. Hence this Namibia Diabetics overview.

You may want to know why am I adding tiers concerning Diabetics to a Namibia and travel website?

First of all is that, I found it difficult to find health professionals who could give as sufficient information concerning Diabetics in Namibia. Some would claim that Diabetics is not their area of specialisation or simply did not want to take drastic measures when it comes to the management of Diabetics. This careful stance has often led to irreversible major complications that could be prevented if it was correctly and timely addressed.

Because the signs and symptoms of diabetics can be tricky, it is easy to miss them. How do I know about this? You see for over two years a close family member in her early 70’s has been complaining of sore legs, general body weakness, poor sight, would drink litres of ice cold water per day and use the bathroom every few minutes. All this were blamed on old age and aging body machinery. When she went to health care facilities, she received pain killers’ prescriptions, even when she developed small sores on her feet; she got bandages and ointments prescriptions although these sores took too long to heal.

After such a long period, we finally took her to one facility were her diabetic condition was immediately diagnosed using a simple self monitoring blood glucose kit (SMBGs) that is available in any health care facility. Thanks God, we knew what the problem was, but the battle was far from over!

The management became a matter of guess work! Despite knowing what was wrong with her, her condition worsened to a point she could leave us anytime and that is not exaggerating!

The turning point came when we made it a duty to find out all that we can about diabetics and how to properly control it. I must not forget to tell you that we became irritants at times to some health professionals. Thanks some realised that irritating them was not our goal but rather we were desperate. We are now wiser that, since Diabetes run in the family, we should start taking care of our self now to prolong or prevent the onset of diabetics for us. Most of our late elders had the same signs and symptoms.

I will try to put all information we discovered about diabetes on this tieres, please keep it mind that this information should not replace your health care team management plan. It should be followed in conjunction with their plan. Where the information on this site contradicts your doctor’s plan, please consult your doctor and together make the final decision on what to follow. Remember, together we can keep diabetics in control, especially if you are in a place where there is limited or no diabetics support facilities at all -Knowledge is power!
