Namibia Duiker

Namibia Duiker is solitary and easily confused with steenbok. They are greyish-yellow, whereas steenbok are smaller with a reddish colour. They have a conspicuous tuft of hair on the forehead, a long black nose line, long narrow ears and closely set horns with ridges. The tail is dark on top and white underneath and the front legs are dark. When disturbed they run in a typically zig-zag way with plunging leaps, hence the name which means diver.

Being creatures of habit, they always use the same paths, latrines and resting places of hallows scraped out sandy soil. Duikers are independent of water and seldom drink even when water is available. They are extremely territorial and a male will stalk and charge an intruding male. This can ensue in a furious battle with serious stab wounds being inflicted on the fleeing animal.
