Namibia: Rehoboth

The small town of Rehoboth lies 90 kilometer south of Windhoek on the B1 National Road. It has a strong spring and was founded in 1844 as a mission station. But because of the frequent attacks and lootings by the Namas, it was abandoned a few years later.

In 1870, a trek of about 100 Basters families from the Cape reached the deserted place and settled here. The Basters (Afrikaans for bastards) are racially mixed descendants of Khoikhoi women and Boerish immigrants from the Cape.

Just west of Rehoboth is the Oanob Dam, which supplies Rehoboth with its water. The hot spring resort and the shores of the Oanob Dam are especially popular over weekends.

There are picnic places with barbecue facilities, a restaurant, bungalows and a number of walking trails around the dam. Oanob is a favoured venue for day and weekend outings, both for locals as well as for birdwatchers and water-sport enthusiasts. Another popular attraction for tourists and locals is the Reho-Spa which offers a heated indoor pool and outdoor pool.
