Population of Namibia

The total population of Namibia is estimated at 2.3 million. Namibia is one of the three most sparsely populated countries in Africa. The average population density is 2.6 people per square kilometer.

Around 15% of these resides in the capital city, Windhoek. Approximately 37% of the population lives in urban areas.

The South (Karas region) is the most sparsely populated part of the country and home to the Nama people of Namibia. Some people say that this is due to the arid climate of the region although some believe that the Nama population was tremendously reduced during the colonial war between the Namas and German settlers.

Ovamboland that make up the four political regions of Namibia (Oshikoto, Oshana, Omusati and Ohangwena regions, famously known as the four O's of Namibia) is the most densely populated part of Namibia.

English is the official language, while Oshiwambo, Afrikaans, Herero, Nama/Damara, German, Lozi, Kwangali and Tswana are the most common native languages spoken in Namibia.
